The emergence of computer-voice-integration, online consulting now allows trade promotion organizations such as MBITA, to use eTraining content as a consulting tool when providing online consulting. MBITA is currently developing an ‘on-demand’ eTraining program for the GlobalCalifornia.org project (coming soon), and recently became part of a grant to the Fisher Graduate School of International Business at MIIS for the Globalization and Localization of Business Exports (GLOBE) project where MBITA will provide ‘on-demand’ eTraining to promote U.S. exports. Economic Information Services (EIS)

Economic Information Services, LLC (EIS) provides international trade and investment assistance to firms interested in Central Asia, the Russian Federation, and other CIS countries. Scott J. Sambucci is the Founder and Director of EIS. Scott has lived in the Republic of Kazakhstan where he completed academic research, taught at KIMEP University in Almaty, and consulted for the Kazakhstani government on an urban planning project. Based from Scott's business relationships and experience overseas, EIS provides economic and business environment research, facilitates trade partnerships, and consults firms on investment risks.


Currently, EIS is working with the Embassy of Kazakhstan to promote their 4th annual "Kazakhstan Investment Conference," which the Embassy is hosting in San Diego, CA on September 9, 2005. The conference is designed to introduce and develop business, trade, and investment partnerships between among US and Kazakhstan-based companies. Particular attention will be given to the following sectors:

  • Biotechnology, Health Care, and Pharmaceuticals
  • Manufacturing & Construction technologies

Institute for Trade and Commercial Diplomacy

ITCD focuses on training business and government professionals in the skills required to manage the development of government trade policies and the negotiation of international trade agreements. ITCD develops training materials, conducts training courses, and most recently completed the development of an on-line certificate program.

Any organization affected by the actions of its own government or by foreign governments has to be able to participate actively in formal and informal consultations that take place between the private sector and governments on the development of policies and negotiating objectives. The whole process of consultation and negotiation through which governments determine their own policies and negotiate agreements with other countries is often referred to as Commercial Diplomacy. Managers responsible for interacting with government to advance the interests of a company or an industry need a special set of Commercial Diplomacy skills. It includes the ability to analyze the commercial, macroeconomic, policy-related, political, and legal aspects of an issue, and to communicate and negotiate effectively with domestic and foreign stakeholders and governments.


ITCD develops world-class training programs and materials targeted at the professional practice of Commercial Diplomacy. Effective Commercial Diplomacy empowers officials and managers in governments, corporations, industry associations, and interest groups to influence trade-related policy decisions and negotiations. ITCD's training resources allow students and practitioners in the field to learn how to analyze the issues that impact on business, to communicate effectively with decision-makers through written documents and oral presentations, and to develop the strategies needed to advance their interests.

Mr. Feketekuty, the President of ITCD, is a former senior U.S. trade negotiator and policy official, who developed a specialized masters degree program for training trade policy professionals for both the government and the private sector at the Monterey Institute for International Studies (MIIS), in Monterey, California. He subsequently founded ITCD to develop the instructional manuals, case studies, and simulations that enrich a professionally oriented, hands-on training program. ITCD makes many of these resources available through its website, commercialdiplomacy.org.

 

Mr. Feketekuty writes, lectures, and consults on a wide range of trade policy topics, and through ITCD provides customized training courses in the area of trade policy and international trade negotiations. He has worked closely with international organizations such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Bank, and the Organization of American States (OAS), as well as universities in China, South Africa, Vietnam, and Central America.


ITCD launched an Online Certificate Program on the Professional Practice of Commercial Diplomacy on April 1, 2005. ITCD believes that online programming is an essential element of its future education and training services. This module-based program leads participants through the steps an accomplished professional in Commercial Diplomacy must follow in advancing the interests of the organization she or he represents in trade policy decisions, trade negotiations and the settlement of trade disputes.   • The analytical skills and research methods required for an in-depth understanding of policy issues that affect international business and investment;
  • The communication and consensus-building skills required for influencing national trade policy decisions and negotiating positions that may impact business positively or negatively; and

Fisher Graduate School of International Business Receives $366,000 in Grants to Help U.S. Companies Increase Business Exports

The Monterey Institute of International Studies announced today that its Fisher Graduate School of International Business has been awarded a two-year, $183,000 grant through the United States Department of Education's Business and International Education (BIE) Program to establish a Center for the Globalization and Localization of Business Exports (GLOBE) that will assist companies to adapt their products and services for foreign markets.

These funds will be matched by funds from a $2 million challenge grant from the Robert and Marilyn Fisher Family Foundation.

"The Department of Education recognized that the Fisher School and its partners are uniquely positioned to undertake this project," said Dr. Ernest Scalberg, Dean of the Fisher Graduate School of International Business, recognized as one of the "Top 100 International MBA Programs" by Financial Times. "The GLOBE Center will provide consulting, education and research to businesses. At the same time, the project provides students with the opportunity to construct business plans for companies needing localization assistance."

Localization involves tailoring a product or marketing strategy to the differences in culture, language or regulations of customers in foreign countries, a service for which more and more U.S. companies are recognizing the need.

The Fisher School, which has been recognized as a premier business education provider by Beyond Grey Pinstripes 2003 and Princeton Review's "Best 147 Business Schools" for cutting-edge curriculum and international perspective, will develop a curriculum for globalization and localization that will be used in their MBA courses and training programs.



The Fisher School will collaborate with the three other graduate schools at the Monterey Institute as well as the Monterey Bay International Trade Association (MBITA), the Marina Technology Cluster, and the U.S. Export Assistance Center of the United States Department of Commerce in Monterey to develop the GLOBE Center. MBITA will develop and deliver a training program on exporting. The U.S. Export Assistance Center and the Marina Technology Cluster will provide clients and assist with consultation. The graduate schools of the Monterey Institute will provide expertise in export policy, software localization, and language issues. They will also help with product development, sourcing procurement, marketing, distribution, and financing.

'Trade Finance and Online Resources' luncheon was held on April 1, 2005 at the China One International Buffet in Santa Cruz, CA. The event was produced by the Monterey Bay International Trade Association (MBITA), the Silicon Valley Center for International Trade Development (SV CITD) and the U.S. Commercial Service in Monterey Martin T. Goppelt, of Coface U.S.A. discussed credit insurance, credit reporting and international debt collection. The benefits to an exporter are increased sales, risk mitigation and improved banking relationship. Formerly employed in the Banking Industry as an International Trade Finance Officer with Comerica Bank, Mr. Goppelt marketed Letters of Credit, Foreign Exchange, Documentary Collections and EXIM Bank financing. Mr. Goppelt was previously employed in the freight forwarding industry and is a licensed U.S. Customs Broker. Currently, Mr. Goppelt is also President of the Valley International Trade Association (VITA) and a Board Member in the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley.
