Europe
- California exports to the EU declined 1.6 percent in 1999 after strong growth of 7 and 10 percent in 1997 and 1998 respectively. Exports to the EU totaled $22.8 billion in 1999, accounting for 21.6 percent of total California exports.
- Europe's mature markets are an important part of California's diversified export portfolio with 10 European countries ranking among California's top 25 export destinations.
- Exports were down to California's top two European markets. Exports to the UK, California's largest European market and sixth largest overall, declined 5 percent in 1999 to total $5.4 billion. Exports to Germany were down 2.2 percent totaling $4.6 billion in 1999.
- California exports to the Netherlands were up 8.2 percent, totaling $4.2 billion in 1999. This follows on robust growth of 42 and 14 percent in 1997 and 1998 respectively. The Netherlands ranks as California's ninth largest export market, complementing its perennial position as the Golden State's second largest foreign direct investor.
- Other key European markets showing increased purchases of California goods in 1999 include: Italy ($1.4 billion, up 9.8 percent), and Ireland ($1.2 billion, up 12.2 percent). Exports to France ($2.4 billion) were down 2.8 percent.
South America (MERCOSUR)
- California exports to the MERCOSUR economies (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) and its associate members (Chile and Bolivia) declined 7.2 percent in 1999. This follows 13, 5, and 7 percent growth in the last three years respectively.
- Of the key MERCOSUR markets, California exports to Brazil (4.5 percent) were up while sales to Argentina (-26 percent) and Chile (-13 percent) declined.
- Despite this dramatic export growth, exports to the Southern Cone economies still only represent 2.1 percent of total California exports and offer a tremendous opportunity for future export growth for California firms.
ASEAN
- While Southeast Asia has not fully recovered from the Asian financial crisis, they showed significant improvement in 1999. Among the key ASEAN markets, exports to Singapore ($4.9 billion, up 3.2 percent), the Philippines ($1.6 billion, up 6.2 percent) and Thailand ($1.3 billion, up 3.6 percent) experienced growth in 1999, while Malaysia (down 8.8 percent) and Indonesia (down 19.9 percent) continued to decline.
note
Ten Asian destinations, including ASEAN, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, totaled $43.8 billion in 1999, or 40.1% of California's exports.

- California exports to Mexico continue to be driven by exports of electronics and electrical equipment ($5 billion) and industrial machinery and computer equipment ($2.6 billion), which increased 10.8 and 13.8 percent respectively in 1999. This followed on significant double-digit growth for these sectors in each of the last three years. These two sectors account for more than 51 percent of total California exports to Mexico.
